Yoga for Anxiety & Panic Attacks
YOGA FOR
Anxiety & Panic Attacks
I am currently studying Yoga for Anxiety / Panic Attacks and Trauma. Reseach has shown that not everyone who is affected by trauma, necessarily develops PTSD. This paper is looking into trauma, but to use yoga as a way to avoid developing PTSD. Agaibi, C.E., & Wilson, J.P. (2005). Speaking from my own personal experience and journey, yoga therapy can help to regain the stabilization of the autonomic nervous system. If a person is stuck in the flight / fright / freeze situation the mind may tend to forget to ignore messages from the emotional brain. Kolk, V. D., Bessell, (2015). Leaving the body to react very slowly to the senses, eg, clenching the jaw and grating teeth without even realising it is happening. The body will eventually say “whoosh” I’ve had enough! (autonomic nervous system) resulting in no connection to one’s own physical body. This dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system needs to begin to heal and allow the natural flow of energy from the central nervous system (brain), to peripheral nervous system (limbs, skin) and then the autonomic nervous system (heart, organs, hormones). The body needs to be retaught to listen for biological impulses allowing reconnection to the body. Yoga helps reconnect to our bodies, calming the nervous system and helping people return to a baseline physiological state.

My background is in teaching. I have taught, SEN, primary, secondary, post-16 and English as a second language for a combination of 20 years. At the age of 28 I began to study Karate, I reached 2nd Dan (Black Belt). After back surgery I realised I could no longer teach Karate the way I used too, unfortunately.
I am a mum, nan and a great nan all of which I love. At the ripe young age of 57 I performed a backbend which I had not been able to achieve for over 20 years, this is the miracle of yoga. Yes, if I can do it, you can too. Yoga really is for everyone, so why not give it a try?
